Terrace at Kolkata
This 12th floor apartment in Kolkata is an extension of the living room and offers stunning views of the Howrah Bridge. The design brief was to integrate the outdoor area with the interiors to create a functional green space that is usable throughout the year.
The terrace features a tropical garden with a raised lawn approached by a cantilevered step crossing over a pebble filled drain channel which serves a functional as well as an aesthetic purpose.
Wood and granite steps leads to a wood-decked gazebo, perfect for enjoying summer and monsoon evenings. The gazebo has a waterproof canvas roof, a chambray ceiling, and brass jali panels depicting nature, with comfortable wicker furniture and a contemporary sculpture completing the look. The terrace’s raised lawn is bordered by vibrant foliage and flowering shrubs, which block out unwanted views and conceal drainage lines. Strategic lighting highlights the plants, water feature, and gazebo.
At the far end of the terrace, a contemporary Indian-style water feature with three carved urns (inspired by Shiva ling) creates a serene ambiance. Water flows from the urns onto a black marble platform, providing a calming sound. The water feature is best enjoyed from a wood and stone bench in the corner, offering a perfect spot to relax and view the majestic Howrah Bridge.
